A short talk with Dr. Daniel Mohr, cofounder of Plumento Foods
Tell us about Plumento and how you guys got involved in the edible insect world
I lived 15 years in China and met other members of our team there.
We saw there how the protein demand is increasing to a level that is not healthy for our planet and also how in Asia how could be normal to eat insects.
When we heard about the change in legislation in Europe with the new Novel Food regulation, we decided to try to make this happen in Germany.
What products are you marketing?
We launched our Noodles with Buffalo Powder on March 2nd in Germany with our Partner METRO AG.
Other Product formats are under development. We focus every day products, where the insects is not visible, they taste good and give the consumer an easy entry to trying this food of the future.
What’s your position in relation to the Novel Food regulation?
The Swiss law maker made it very clear, and insects can be used for human consumption.
Under the EU Novel Food regulation, it is not so easy to bring products to the market. Different EU countries -and in Germany even different regions- have their own interpretation of the legal status. But we are sure that it is a matter of time, and they get clearer on this.
Do you farm your insects or you have contracts with different suppliers?
We don’t farm ourselves at the moment. We have suppliers in different EU countries.
What are you expansion plans for the next two year?
We just launched our first products and need to learn now from the market, how we have to adapt our products and which product formats fit the consumer.
We want to expand slowly and create a viable product range.
